Q&A, From G&G: A-Dubs

V of Grit & Glamour recently answered and asked some interesting questions. We were lucky enough not only to learn a little about the gorgeous and full-on glamazon V, but also to be included in the list of bloggers from whom she wants some answers. As I am in desperate need of a break from the Project That Will Not End, I’m ringing in right now.

V’s questions appear in bold below with my answers in regular type directly after.

1. Practically everyone is six degrees from a celebrity, political figure, or famous person. Will you explain your six degrees of separation from someone famous?

A VERY close friend dated Dean McDermott (a.k.a. Tori Spelling’s creepoid husband who left his pregnant wife to be famous) when she was in high school and he was not. My friend (whom I did not know at the time) dumped him. She couldn’t understand why he wanted to go out with someone in high school. Clearly, he’s always been a class act.

Also, my partner’s friend did the voice-overs for CBC Television at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece. That’s right. I am hooked up, celebrity-wise.

2. What have you always wanted to do, but haven’t yet?
Ha! ‘So many answers, many of which are unfit for this public forum. Let’s go with “Finish the Project That Will Not End.” Because then, you know, I’d have a book.

3. Your favourite meal is. . .

I cannot choose because I love food so very, very much. If I HAD to choose, it would be the six course private dinner served at a winery in the British Columbia interior as part of a friend’s wedding celebrations. The chef created each course to pair perfectly with a different wine, and gave a brief description of his process and the flavours before each plate was served. It was divine. Also, by the end, I was drunk-drunketty-drunk.
Short answer: anything that pairs divinely with a divine wine.

4. If you could only save one pair of shoes in your closet, which pair would it be, and why?
These ones (by Fluevog):

Because they’re exquisite, utterly impractical (yet not entirely uncomfortable), and the first pair I ever splurged on just because I could.

5. Which handbag would you buy if money were no object?
Honestly, I wouldn’t. I don’t have the handbag love. When I dream, I dream in boots (currently, anything buttery soft, black or dove-grey, and over-the-knee) and dresses (right now, I want this and this, because I can’t let go of summer).

6. Who is your girl crush?

I have a few. Here are two:
Celebrity: Kristen Stewart-but only when she’s not hanging on her Twilight co-stars.
Nerd crush: An older butch woman on the executive of a professional association of which I’m a member. Well, sometimes she’s butch. Sometimes she rocks a pencil skirt and I almost lose myself in her awesomeness.

7. What is your vice?

Deep, full-bodied, red wine. Well, that and vampire fiction. Okay, and maybe shoes. And boots. But mostly wine.

8. Last song you listened to?
This one. But before that, this one. Because I’ve got the mellow playlist going to facilitate work (and-obviously-procrastination).
Thanks, V, for thinking of us! D-Med & E-Jo, are you going to answer, too?
To be honest, I don’t have any lists of questions for you. I mostly enjoy learning a little more about you each time you post on your blog, even though I also groove on these question list thingies.

Today, I mostly want to know what you dream about when you dream of shopping.
Because fantasy shopping items are always ethically produced as well as immediately accessible and entirely capable of inducing lifelong happiness.

  1. @EK: Oooh! I want some La Canadiennes, too! Preferably in that deep delicious red. Also, pregnant lady skinny jeans, huh? If you find 'em, will you be posting outfit photos? Because they sound just about perfect, baby-highlighting-wise. I am a full on supporter of showing a LOT of baby tummy lines.@C: The dancing garb and suit sound wonderful, to be sure. Also, what "tall russet boots with leather bows"? I'm going to fantasy shop them right now (i.e. bookmark & visit them regularly, but not buy). Finally, welcome back! You've been gone for wayyyyy too long, blogoverse-wise. I'm just saying.@R: Oh yeah. I'll be fantasy shopping your cravings, too. Thanks for the heads-up.@G&G: Ha! Maybe someday, we'll do the wine-cracking thing. Maybe someday soon.@Charlotte: Was it being carried by a real person, or shown in a magazine? It sounds beautiful. . . Le sigh.@Beth: Well, it's the thought that counts. Plus, how does one leave a delicious malbac for a whole season? (I'm kidding: I don't think I've had a malbac. Which one/s do you recommend that I use to educate myself?)@Sh: Gah. Your shopping dream/nightmare/s are freaking me out. They are horrible. Well, except for the 6-buck shoes that are worth zillions.@SU: What? Are you judging me? Or stealing my fantasy crush? Own up, or receive a (virtual) pounding. (I get cagey about my fantasy ladies.)@KB: Mmmm. Those boots sound good, too. As do the sweaters and closet-focussed assistant. I like how big you dream.

  2. Anne, I too have that problem with boots–I have never had them professionally stretched, but my weight does not seem to affect my ability to buy boots–it is always a challenge. That said, Banana Republic has been good to me in the past!A-Dubs, I forgot to rave about the shoes. They are fabulous! Utterly fabulous.

  3. fantasy shopping? custom-designing jewelry with antique stones, of course….i thought Wendy B.'s onyx skull would look great as a pendant with various sized/colored stones set along the top like the decorations they have on those sugar skulls…..not like i ever actually HAVE shopping fantasies, you understand. ; )

  6. You people. When are we all meeting up in Vegas to get drunk drunketty drunk? Also, I need to let you know that bubbly wine is the new daily wine, and if you ever get your hands on a case of the Korbel Rouge that they only sell direct from the winery you should grab it and drink like a fish. And the reason I need to tell you that is…bubbly wine!

  7. I am away from the blogosphere for like 25 hours and all this happens! I am also dont care for bags (and proudly care a butchy army style canvas bag everywhere) but dream of comfy yet stylish boots that go with everything (so I live in fantasy world but thats OK). Also, I get the KStew thing. Don't know why, though. It must be the ears and the singing.I am looking forward to reading E Jo and D Meds answers (stupid German Keyboard is screwing with my usually sloppy punctuation).

  8. No lie, I used to dream about shopping sprees. I've had shopping spree dreams since I was 8 years old.Now when I dream shop, I see myself as this fabulous cross of Elle Woods (Reese's character from the movie, not the book), the revamped Andie (book, not movie) of Devil Wears Prada, and my already fabulous self. Of course there should be an unlimited credit limit that automatically gets paid off immediately after every purchase. However, I wouldn't be a huge crazy shopping fanatic. Tasteful pieces, Chanel, Gucci, Prada, Michael Kors when I want to kick it casual. Oh and the shoes! The shoes that would spill from my closet! The bags of all sizes and shapes and colors. Suddenly every amazing designer would make fabulous cruelty free bags and shoes and accessories. (Forgive me, I was sick yesterday and watched "Bride Wars", "Legally Blonde 2" and "Devil Wears Prada" back to back. I am drowning in Anne Hathaway, but I love her. I can't help myself. "Rachel Getting Married is a MUST see!)To be honest though, as much as I would love to hit boutiques, I would love more to support my DIY sisters (and brothers). There are so many great pieces out there being made that I would buy in a heart beat if I had a better handle on my budget LOL!

  9. D-Med & A-Dubs: Phew, I feel so much better about my nice, rippling calves (such an appropriate description). I do have bigger feet, so it seems that calf sizes in boots aren't in proportion to actual foot size. I'm considering stretching my new pair of suede boots (seen at TCC today, and I positioned my legs to hide the squish) but I'm still deciding between that and returning them. I'm irked that they don't fit well enough because I measured my calves and the measurements on the 6pm site made it seem like they'd fit.I'll definitely check out the Pliner boots though. Thanks for the tip!The Klingon wine, on the other hand, I may stay away from 🙂

  10. A: Every pair of tall boots I buy has to be stretched, sometimes by me (and it's awful because the zippers always either pinch my squished legs, or rip my tights apart), or by professionals. When I bought my Fluevog Bondgirls, for example, they had to be put on the stretcher at the Fluevog store and stay there for two weeks. It was traumatic.Ch: Nice. And excellent effort to hold it together and not make off with her bag.DM: I'm ignoring your first comment. And no. No it doesn't make you cool(er). Also, that store was Naturalizer. Also, Donald J. Pliner makes boots with a variety of calf measurements and/or a band of elastic that extends the length of the boot on the inside of the leg. I'm stalking a pair on ebay right now.

  11. I have the same problem with my rippling calves, Anne. Our friend Rinty the Crusher bought some boots at this place that sold boots in two different calf sizes but I can't remember what it was called. A-Dubs, do you remember? Rinty, are you lurking?I haven't tried Vampire wine but I have tried Klingon Blood wine. Which only makes me even cooler, right?

  12. Oh no, Dubs–it was sitting on the floor next to a real (and lovely) person. Did I fantasize that she'd get up to go to her appointment and forget it there? And that I could dump all the contents out into my bag, leave it in the same spot, and make off with her infinitely better-looking one? Maybe. Just for a second…

  13. Wow, those shoes are fabulous! I don't ever dream about shopping (which is pretty remarkable given how much I enjoy it and partake in it), but I would definitely dream of your red shoes. Also, I'd love some knee-high boots that actually fit my calves. They're in transition mode from festively plump to athletic, neither of which seems to be a market that boot makers currently cater to.Have you ever tried Vampire wine? It'd be a lovely way to combine vices.

  14. I dream of an unlimited budget, or at least a functional budget. A close friend tells me that this (functional, not unlimited) will come when grad school ends, but I am not sure I believe her…And unlimited Malbec, to be used appropriately, of course.

  15. You'll be glad to hear then that the Uncle Kracker rule remains very much in effect in my car. I remain unconvinced by your overly-earnest-Green Day-song justification.

  16. No. The "Mellow" playlist is snooze music, and I can work with it in the background. Also, it drowned out the dingus at the table next to me in the coffee shop. Apparently, texting is, like, this new awesome thing that he really wants to be good at. Also, I continue to know and designate a wien when I see one.

  17. Umm… A-Dubs. "Wake Me Up When September Comes"?? Is this project turning you earnest?? It also does call into question your ability to designate someone a wien.

  18. @EK: Oooh! I want some La Canadiennes, too! Preferably in that deep delicious red. Also, pregnant lady skinny jeans, huh? If you find 'em, will you be posting outfit photos? 19. Shopping dreams? Perfect boots, though the definition of said perfection changes. Right now I want buttery leather, brown, just below knee, slightly chunky sole, subtle motorcycle-style buckles. Also, fine merino wool and cashmere sweaters, turtlenecks and cardigans, along with someone to deal with their upkeep and proper storage. All of these fantasy items go very well with red wine.

  20. Mmmm…I am with you on the red wine…and those Fluevogs are enchanting. I also do not really get the handbag thing. My shopping dreams are usually stressful (you meant real dreams, right?). I'm back working in either the ladies' clothing store or the Christmas store, and people are trying to mess with my displays. Sometimes there are fish-tanks glowing, and sometimes the people take the windows out and climb in when I'm trying to close.Erm, otherwise, I always dream about finding the Most Fabulous Shoes in a thrift store for $6.

  21. I tried to give up red wine for summer- figured i should switch to white to match the season- I am drinking a 2009 malbac as I am writing this…

  22. I'm right there with you on the deep red wines and the buttery-soft boots. Fantasy shopping? I'm not sure I do that, though the other day in a doctor's waiting room I did see a beat-up gorgeous butter-soft brown leather took it to Paris ten years ago & it's still beautiful organizer handbag/tote that I coveted deeply.

  23. OK, first, damn, you're fast! Second, thank you for the stupendous intro. You are too kind. Third, my apologies for not including E-Jo. I drafted that post before E-Jo joined and I was remiss in revising, but clearly, please, it's a great opp to get to know her.Fourth, I love any academic who will admit she was "drunk-drunketty-drunk." I only wish we could all crack a few reds and get drunk-drunketty-drunk together!♥ Vhttp://www.gritandglamour.comOoh, and P.S. I knew the six degrees question would yield something interesting. Poor Tori.

  24. I dream of all sorts of different clothes: the perfect Wild West/Steampunk/Tribal Fusion belly dance costume designed for me by Lee Kobus, and a Devotchka song to go with it; a perfect-fitting classic feminine suit with a portrait collar, a la Sarah Palin but much better on me because I am actually smart; the tall russet boots with leather bows that just turned up at Anthropologie (sob). But I don't really dream of haute couture, which is probably all for the best.

  25. Wine pairings and delicious food: heaven! When I dream of shopping… well lately I dream of jewelry that won't tarnish, but doesn't make me look conservative, and I'm with you on the dresses and boots. I want a pair of La Canadienne's something crazy. Oh, and some skinny jeans for pregnant ladies, but I might just do that with my next paycheck. It's difficult to really indulge in fashion fantasies when your body is all out of whack. Someday, I pray, my normal body will return!
